HISTORY: 101

UDM represents a 30 year evolution of Uptempo Electronic Dance Music. Although the name is similar to today's dubbed electronic dance music culture EDM, UDM official began in 1988 in Chicago's West suburbs. Just shortly after the Latin (Electro) Hip Hop/Breakdance Music exploded into the underground, Chicago producers created a new electronic style of Disco called House Music. In the mixes though, DJ's would often pay homage to the Breakdance and Electro Hip Hop sounds by digging in the crates to find uptempo broken beat tracks that were being produced with the Roland TR-808, TR-909, and CR-78 drum machines. These beats were much tougher than the 4x4 beats of House Music, and often sparked dance circles that were filled with Ex-Breakdancers who now focused on footwork and new dance moves like the Cabbage Patch and Freddie Cruger. To thicken their 4x4 House beats, producers started layering their beats with samples of drum breaks and intros from 70's funk and soul records. Mixed with rap lyrics, the style evolved into Hip House, which was an energetic broken beat harder style of House Music. The commercialization of this Hip House Music and Latin Hip Hop (Freestyle) caused a split in the scene. Hip House, House, and Freestyle had gone commercial but the deeper and experimental sounds of Chicago's Intrumental House and Detroit Techno formed a new underground scene. This scene gathered away from the commercial scene, in warehouses and most often Illegaly. The birth of this scene became a huge phenominom in the UK, they called it Rave. From there the UK took over by mixing Detroit Techno Synths, Break Beats, and sped up Hip Hop & Dance Vocals. They soon added Ragga Dance Hall vocals on top of those break beats. They called it Hardcore and then UK 'Ardcore and Breakbeat. As Hardcore and Breakbeat evolved to even faster tempos as high as 180bpm, the music styles started to split again. The UK 'Ardcore Ragga Vocal tracks spawned yet another new name - Jungle Music. Deeper, more techno influenced producers of Jungle focused more on a forward thinking 2 Step style with Breakbeats. The sounds of this futuristic music was dubbed Drum and Bass.
